In a significant ceremony, Mohan Yadav, 58, took the oath as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries. The swearing-in also saw Jagdish Devda and Rajendra Shukla being sworn in as deputy chief ministers.

Pre-Oath Rituals and Tributes

Before the oath ceremony, Yadav visited a temple in Bhopal and paid respects at the state BJP office to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and BJP’s founding ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

A Unanimous Decision

Yadav’s appointment as the new chief minister came after he was unanimously elected as the BJP legislative party leader. Coming from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, Yadav was a minister in the previous Shivraj Singh Chouhan government.

OBC Representation and Political Shift

With over 48% of Madhya Pradesh’s population belonging to the OBCs, the decision to choose Yadav reflects the BJP’s strategic move to strengthen its core voter base. This choice also marks a shift from the long-standing leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, denying him a fifth term as chief minister.

Not all good there is controversy as well

Ujjain Simhastha land usage

In the Ujjain Master Plan 2035 development project started in July 2023, the land use of 185 out of 872 acres reserved for Ujjain Simhastha (Kumbh Mela) was changed from agricultural land to residential land and freed, 27 acres of it are in the names of Mohan Yadav, his real estate firm, his wife Seema Yadav and his sisters Lela Bai and Kalawati, who is also a BJP Councillor in Ujjain Municipal Corporation. Some more land is also under the name of his household servants.

The land was sought after for real estate due to the construction of a nearby bypass road, and the remaining of the freed land came under the name of BJP Minister of State, Vibhash Upadhyay, his family members, other BJP members and other builders connected to the party. Mohan Yadav has control over his portion of land through 8 divisions and his firm has started construction of a private colony on the land.

It is alleged that this is done under the guise of Master Plan 2035 and changes to it which were demanded by poor families whose houses were situated on the land reserved for the Simhastha. When journalists asked questions to the Simhastha administrator, he refused to comment on the project.

Congress Councillor Ravi Rai and Congress leader Vivek Yadav have also complained that there are houses of poor families situated on the land reserved for the Simhastha which should have been freed but instead different land has been freed for the minister, his relatives and others. It is estimated that by 2028, the Simhastha would see 10 to 13 crore attendees for which more land was needed.
