This 365-day course will focus on expanding your English vocabulary by exploring ten words each day with a common etymological root. Each lesson will begin with an explanation of the root word and its meaning, followed by ten new words stemming from that root, along with their definitions, usage examples, and pronunciation guides.

Day 9 – Root Word: “Solvere” (Latin for “to loosen”)

  1. Dissolve (verb): to break up or become liquid.
    • Example: The sugar dissolves in the hot water.
  2. Resolve (verb): to find a solution to a problem or conflict.
    • Example: The negotiators worked tirelessly to resolve the peace talks.
  3. Absolve (verb): to forgive someone of a crime or fault.
    • Example: The priest absolved the sinner of his sins.
  4. Solve (verb): to find the answer to a problem or question.
    • Example: The detective solved the case by analyzing the clues.
  5. Insolvent (adjective): unable to pay debts.
    • Example: The company declared bankruptcy due to its insolvency.
  6. Solace (noun): comfort or relief from sorrow or trouble.
    • Example: She found solace in her friends and family after her loss.
  7. Solvent (noun): a substance that can dissolve another substance.
    • Example: Water is a universal solvent that can dissolve many different materials.
  8. Resolve (noun): a determination to do something.
    • Example: She had a strong resolve to succeed in her career.
  9. Dissolution (noun): the act of breaking up or dissolving something.
    • Example: The dissolution of the marriage left both parties heartbroken.
  10. Absolution (noun): the act of forgiving someone.
    • Example: The priest granted him absolution for his sins.
