This 365-day course will focus on expanding your English vocabulary by exploring ten words each day with a common etymological root. Each lesson will begin with an explanation of the root word and its meaning, followed by ten new words stemming from that root, along with their definitions, usage examples, and pronunciation guides.

Day 7 – Root Word: “Spectare” (Latin for “to look”)

  1. Spectacle (noun): a public show or display, often one that is impressive or entertaining.
    • Example: The fireworks display was a spectacular sight to behold.
  2. Spectator (noun): someone who watches an event or performance.
    • Example: The stadium was packed with spectators for the championship game.
  3. Inspect (verb): to examine something carefully to find any problems or defects.
    • Example: The mechanic inspected the car before giving it the go-ahead.
  4. Ascend (verb): to climb or move upwards.
    • Example: The hiker ascended the mountain to reach the summit.
  5. Prospect (noun): a possible future event or course of action.
    • Example: Studying hard increases your prospects of getting a good job.
  6. Introspection (noun): the act of examining one’s own thoughts and feelings.
    • Example: Taking time for introspection can help you understand yourself better.
  7. Retrospective (adjective): looking back on the past.
    • Example: The exhibition offered a retrospective of the artist’s career.
  8. Circumspect (adjective): careful and thoughtful, especially in making decisions.
    • Example: She was circumspect in her dealings with the suspicious stranger.
  9. Perspective (noun): a particular way of viewing something.
    • Example: It is important to consider different perspectives before forming an opinion.
  10. Perspicuous (adjective): easy to understand; clear and concise.
    • Example: The professor’s explanations were always perspicuous and insightful.
