This 365-day course will focus on expanding your English vocabulary by exploring ten words each day with a common etymological root. Each lesson will begin with an explanation of the root word and its meaning, followed by ten new words stemming from that root, along with their definitions, usage examples, and pronunciation guides.

Day 5 – Root Word: “Trahere” (Latin for “to draw”)

  1. Tractable (adjective): easily controlled or managed. s
    • Example: The horse was tractable and easy to train.
  2. Traction (noun): the force that pulls or propels something forward.
    • Example: The car lost traction in the snow and slid off the road.
  3. Distract (verb): to draw someone’s attention away from something.
    • Example: The loud music distracted me from my work.
  4. Abstract (adjective): not concrete or tangible; existing only as a concept or idea.
    • Example: The concept of love is abstract and difficult to define.
  5. Portray (verb): to represent someone or something in a drawing, painting, or other form of art.
    • Example: The artist portrayed the queen in a regal and dignified manner.
  6. Portrait (noun): a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person or group of people.
    • Example: He hung a portrait of his family above the fireplace.
  7. Extract (verb): to remove something from something else.
    • Example: She extracted the juice from the oranges to make orange juice.
  8. Trace (verb): to follow the path or course of something.
    • Example: The detectives traced the suspect’s movements on the night of the crime.
  9. Retract (verb): to take back or withdraw a statement or opinion.
    • Example: He was forced to retract his false accusations after learning the truth.
  10. Protract (verb): to make something last longer than necessary.
    • Example: The meeting was protracted by unnecessary speeches and arguments.
