This 365-day course will focus on expanding your English vocabulary by exploring ten words each day with a common etymological root. Each lesson will begin with an explanation of the root word and its meaning, followed by ten new words stemming from that root, along with their definitions, usage examples, and pronunciation guides.


Day 1 – Root Word: “Capere” (Latin for “to take”)

  1. Capture (verb): to seize or take control of something.
    • Example: The police captured the escaped prisoner.
  2. Captive (noun): someone who is held prisoner.
    • Example: The captives were held in a dark and dingy dungeon.
  3. Capacity (noun): the ability to hold or contain something.
    • Example: The stadium has a capacity of 100,000 spectators.
  4. Capable (adjective): having the necessary skills or abilities.
    • Example: She is a capable lawyer with a successful track record.
  5. Accept (verb): to receive something willingly.
    • Example: I gratefully accepted the award for my achievements.
  6. Acceptation (noun): the act of accepting.
    • Example: The wide acceptance of the new technology was surprising.
  7. Conception (noun): the formation of an idea or plan.
    • Example: The conception of the internet revolutionized communication.
  8. Susceptible (adjective): easily affected by something.
    • Example: He is susceptible to colds during the winter months.
  9. Receptive (adjective): open to new ideas or suggestions.
    • Example: The audience was receptive to the speaker’s message.
  10. Receipt (noun): a written acknowledgement of payment.
    • Example: I received a receipt for the purchase of the new computer.
