Dheeraj Sahu’s family has a long-standing association with the Congress party. His father, Baldeo, made a significant contribution to the nation’s economy in 1947 by donating Rs 47 lakh and 47 kg of gold to the Government of India. Four out of his five brothers, including Sahu, entered politics. One brother, Shiv Prasad Sahu, was a Lok Sabha MP who won the Ranchi seat twice on a Congress ticket. The family has played a crucial role in supporting the Congress financially and in electoral politics, particularly in Jharkhand.

Political Career and Influence

Dheeraj Sahu, a three-time Rajya Sabha member, contested twice for the Chatra seat in Jharkhand and was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2009 and re-elected in 2010. The Sahu family, particularly during Shiv Prasad Sahu’s tenure, held considerable sway in Congress’s political activities, influencing candidate selections and ministerial positions. The family’s ancestral home is often referred to as the ‘White House of Lohardaga’ due to its pivotal role in Congress’s political activities.

Assets and Financial Details

As per the affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India in 2018, Dheeraj Sahu’s assets amount to more than Rs 34 crore, including moveable and immovable assets. His annual income at that time was approximately Rs 1 crore. The family’s primary business revolves around the liquor industry, with most companies located in Odisha. Sahu’s investments include capital in family-owned companies such as Baldeo Sahu Shiv Prasad Sahu and Baldeo Sahu and Sons.
